a sea of golden waves surrounds you,
above, the vast and terrible sky
distance unmeasurable, deafening
if the earth were to let you go, would you fall upwards forever?
your chest is full of air but you're suffocating,
ecstatic,
the wind roaring in your ears
maybe you're dying,
the thought is electrifying
a shriek
a shadow splits your vision
great wings outstretched, broad enough to blot out the sun
all the world suspended, a second, an eternity
and then it passes,
a blinding light in its wake,
sunlight glinting off burnished feathers
air rushes from your chest like you've been struck
and then you're breathing again

cause getting made you want more
and hoping made it hurt more
